Technological development and market demands bring out newer and more specific needs that have never been considered before.
It is therefore necessary to initiate a real transition process to digitization and Industry 4.0. Many companies have been wondering how they can integrate new manufacturing technologies.
For what purpose?
To improve working conditions, create new business models, and increase the efficiency and production quality of plants.
To achieve the goal of enterprise digitization, the connection between physical and digital systems, Big Data analysis and understanding, and real-time adaptations are indispensable.
The introduction of new machinery, for example, meant that Vieg had to adopt an innovative system for integrating data and production equipment.
Based in Cingoli, VIEG Ltd. has been successfully designing and manufacturing switchboards since 1993, producing all types of switchboards to meet all market needs.
To pursue a path of process digitization, Vieg began the digitization process by adopting new technologies. Specifically, to achieve and meet the standards set by Industry 4.0 directives and systematize data collection in a single management software.
The collaboration between Digimark and Vieg began with the adoption of Project, dedicated to project time offloading, and Time and Attendance Control, introducing employee entry badges, to be coordinated with business management software.
The need subsequently arose to interconnect three machines to its management program, having different communication protocols with each other.
THE SOLUTION: digitization industry 4.0
By adopting the MID module of Portant 4.0 by Digimark, it was possible to convey all machine data to the company’s management software. This is to be able to manage them in a systematized way, thus being able to guide strategic choices in terms of efficiency and performance.
THE CHARACTERISTICS
The customized enterprise digitization solution, created for Vieg, starts with the installation of the Machine Interconnection Module on each of the three machines.
The advantageous features of the Mid, which is always running while the machine is in use, emerge when information about the processing performed needs to be communicated to the management program. In this regard, at the end of the day the machine generates a file containing all the activities performed, which is translated into machining parameters for the management software. Such data synchronization can take place either automatically or manually.

The benefits obtained from VIEG:
- Achieving Industry 4.0 compliance standards, which are necessary to take advantage of national funds;
- Tracking of work performed on a daily basis;
- Data collection and storage, for the formulation and monitoring of KPIs, as well as the OEE indicator, Overall Equipment Effectiveness, referring to the overall efficiency of the production plant.
With theMid module of Portant 5.0 it is possible:
- Interconnect and have all automated units in the company communicate with the management software, even when different communication protocols are in place;
- Make factory devices communicate with the central control system and various management programs;
- Collect and process data for the creation of KPIs and statistics, which are useful for obtaining all the benefits of an integrated system;
- More accurately predict the maintenance activities of automated units.
The innovation of the Digimark MID module resides:
- In the ability to talk to all machines flexibly, regardless of each machine’s own communication protocol;
- In making even the most obsolete machines communicate, adding the electronic component sufficient for MID operation;
- Inautonomously adapting to the inclusion of a new piece of machinery within the company structure, without having to reprogram other elements of the production system and management already in place.
